Indefinite: a, an
Definite: the

We use "definite" to mean sure, certain. "Definite" is particular.
We use "indefinite" to mean not sure, not certain. "Indefinite" is general.
When we are talking about one thing in particular, we use the. When we are talking about one thing in general, we use a or an.
Think of the sky at night. In the sky we see 1 moon and millions of stars. So normally we would say:
I saw the moon last night.
I saw a star last night.

Of course, often we can use the or a/an for the same word. It depends on the situation, not the word. Look at these examples:


We want to buy an umbrella. (Any umbrella, not a particular umbrella.)
Where is the umbrella? (We already have an umbrella. We are looking for our umbrella, a particular umbrella.)
This little story should help you understand the difference between the and a, an:

A man and a woman were walking in Oxford Street. The woman saw a dress that she liked in a shop. She asked the man if he could buy the dress for her. He said: "Do you think the shop will accept a cheque? I don't have a credit card."

حروف تعریف

چه موقع از 'the dog' و چه موقع از a dog استفاده میکنیم؟ ( در این درس ما فقط راجع به اسامی مفرد قابل شمارش صحبت میکنیم)
The, a, an به نام حروف تعریف نامیده میشوند. ما آنها را به دو گروه "معین" و "غیرمعین" تقسیم میکنیم.
غیر معین: a, an
معین: the
ما از حروف تعریف معین زمانی استفاده میکنیم که معنای قطعی بدهد
زمانی از حروف تعریف غیر معین استفاده میکنیم که معنای غیر قطعی بدهد.
وقتی در مورد چیزی به طور مشخص صحبت میکنیم از the و وقتی از چیزی به طور کلی صحبت میکنیم از a, an استفاده میکنیم.
به آسمان شب فکر کنید. در آسمان ما یک ماه و میلیونها ستاره میبینیم. بنابراین معمولا اینطوری میگوییم>
I saw the moon last night.
I saw a star last night


مسلما" میتوانیم از the, a, an برای یک کلمه استفاده کنیم. که این به موقعیت بستگی دارد نه به کلمه. به مثالهای زیر توجه کنید


We want to buy an umbrella. (Any umbrella, not a particular umbrella.)

Where is the umbrella? (We already have an umbrella. We are looking for our umbrella, a particular umbrella.)
چتر کجاست؟ (ما یک چتر داریم و دنبال همان چتر مشخص میگردیم نه هر چتری)

میبینیم که در هر دو جمله ما هم از حرف تعریف معین و هم غیر معین بنا به موقعیت استفاده کردیم.
